POSTPONED: Birch Bark Basket Harvest and Canoe Ride
EVENT INFO: Birch bark is a resource that was very important in many traditional Anishnaabe sugar bush activities. We plan to depart from a location in canoes in search of birch trees that will best accommodate a sustainable harvest of birch bark. We are working with the Leelanau Conservancy and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to identify birch trees within the Treaty Area we hope to sustainably harvest from. Please come ready to canoe, hike, and learn how to harvest birch bark. Canoes, canoe captains, life preservers, water, and all the necessary tools will be provided. The canoe trip will not venture far from shore and will remain in shallow water to reduce the risk of incident.
EVENT DATE: SEPTEMBER 7th – Starting at 1pm
LOCATION: Houdek Dunes Natural Area - 5959 N. Manitou Trail, Leland MI 49654
